My how the times flies…you enter your Freshman year as a young high school student and then before you know it, you’re graduating high school! There are several sayings about how fast time goes by but my most favorite one is ‘In A Blink of an Eye’. You’re a young person, then you’re ready to bust out into the Real World.

There is great hope that you enjoyed your High School years, that it will definitely be something you’ll look back on and have great memories. High School should be one of the best times of your life but from here, it’s all up!!!! College and then really getting out into the Real World.

Congrats to all the 2012 Seniors of Pickens High School! We look forward to seeing you go on to accomplish wonderful and great things in Life and hope you’ll always remember your times here!

Graduation 2012 - May

We started this Senior Blog at the beginning of Senior Graduation 2009 - so in essence, the summer of 2008! We had a good friend, Wesley Roberson, who graduated in 2008 and we had gotten his class’ ‘Graduation Walk’ to the field and there was Wesley with all his friends. It was a great memory, so we decided to carry on the tradition and in ‘09, ‘10 and well, 2011 we were there…we didn’t get the walk in 2011, but some pictures and vidoe after graduation.

This year, we are looking to get the 2012 Graduation Walk to the Field - so be sure to stay tuned and catch the video of our 2012 PHS Seniors!

Austin Stone - Featured PHS Senior For November

Welcome Austin Stone, PHS Featured Senior For November.Austin is an active member of Tate United Methodist Church and Youth group. He was recently nominated and elected as the youth church council chairman. During the annual church charge conference this year he was nominated and elected as the Church Lay Leader. At age 17, he has become the youngest church member to hold this position. He begins his duties as Lay Leader on January 1, 2012. Austin is also actively involved with the Pickens County Youth Leadership Program and has been part of the program since he was a Sophomore. He also participated in a special summer youth leadership program called Youth Dylead following his Freshman year. (US Rep. Tom Graves, guest speaker at last year’s Youth Leadership graduation at the tech school).

He is an active member of his church youth group and he has helped to assist people with various needs throughout the community and county. He also enjoys helping with the younger youth in our church.

Austin has been on the high school wrestling team throughout high school and during his Junior Year on the wrestling team, he ranked 5th at Regionals. He was on the PHS football team his Sophomore and Junior years.

Austin has always talked about wanting to be a Herpetologist (study of amphibians and reptiles) but he would also like to help with the environment by being a environmentalist or naturalist. He has talked about possibly becoming a missionary because he really wants to be able to help others, especially those in need.

Austin Will be a PHS Graduate in May 2012!

FREE MOVIE TO COMBAT LOCAL SUICIDE RATE
To Save a Life to be Shown at Pickens High School

On Saturday, October 8th at 6 p.m. the Pickens High School chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, in partnership with Cool Springs Baptist Church in Tate, will host a free movie showing open to the public of the popular indie movie To Save a Life. The movie, rated PG-13, is the fictional story of high school basketball star Jake Taylor who loses a friend to suicide. While Jake struggles to change the way he treats people, he meets resistance from his own friends. The movie trailer can be watched at www.tosavealifemovie.com

“This is an entertaining movie with its light, funny moments, but it also addresses very real problems people face,” said Justin Grice, a member of Cool Springs Baptist Church.

The film depicts realistically life on a high school campus and shows how students can make a difference in the lives of their hurting peers. According to the Journal of Abnormal Psychology, up to 39 percent of teens have had at least one episode of self-injury each year. Further, it is estimated depression effects one of every eight teenagers (www.teensuicide.us).

To Save a Life has also sparked a family movement in Cool Springs Baptist Church. The church is planning on holding a six week series each Sunday beginning on October 9th at 11:00 a.m. called “To Save a Family.” The sermon series will use actual clips from the movie to demonstrate issues that families face, and how they can be addressed Biblically.

“I’m excited to see a change in our community, and even more excited that much of this is being led by our youth,”Grice said.

Be understanding of others - Treat others as you want to be treated. It’s common courtesy and always know someone is always dealing with issues in their lives.

The girl you just called fat? She’s over dosing on diet pills. The girl you just called ugly? She spends hours putting makeup on hoping people will like her. The boy you just tripped? He is abused enough at home. See that man with the ugly scars? He fought for our country. That guy you just made fun of for crying? His mother is dying. Put this on your status for an hour, if you are against bullying. Save a life. National Suicide Prevention Week.

Warning signs to look out for if you think your friend - or yourself - may be in trouble. Some signs that your friend may be suicidal can include…

Talking or writing about death or suicide
Appearing depressed more often
Feeling hopeless or helpless
Feeling strong anger
Experiencing dramatic mood swings
Abuse of drugs or alcohol
Acting impulsively
Experiencing a change in eating or sleeping habits

These are just a few of the warning signs to look out for. Be aware though, Healthkickers - you should never be alone when taking on the task of helping a friend who may be suicidal. Dealing with a situation where a friend is depressed or suicidal can be extremely difficult to handle, so if you know someone who you suspect may be having suicidal thoughts, please refer to the numbers and websites below on further, detailed descriptions on how to deal with the situation.
